गुरुपौर्णिमा

                                                        अष्टादशपुराणानां सारं व्यासेन कीर्तितम् |
  परोपकार: पुण्याय पापाय परपीडनम् ||                                                                                                                                             आषाढ शुद्ध पौर्णिमेला म्हणजे या तिथीला आपण गुरुपौर्णिमा म्हणून गौरवितो.
आषाढ शुद्ध पौर्णिमेला गुरुपौर्णिमा किंवा व्यासपौर्णिमा म्हणतात. ज्यांनी महाभारत, पुराणे लिहिली त्या व्यासमुनींना वंदन करण्याचा, त्यांची पूजा करण्याचा हा मंगलदिन आहे. त्यांच्याएवढे श्रेष्ठ गुरुजी, आचार्य अद्याप झालेले नाहीत, अशी आपली श्रद्धा आहे. अशा या आचार्यांना साक्षात देवाप्रमाणे मानावे असे शास्त्रात कथन केले आहे. एवढेच नव्हे तर महर्षी व्यास हे भारतीय संस्कृतीचे शिल्पकार आणि मूलाधार मानले जात. ज्या ग्रंथात धर्मशास्त्र, नीतिशास्त्र, व्यवहारशास्त्र, मानसशास्त्र आहे, असा सर्वश्रेष्ठ ग्रंथ त्यांनी लिहिला. ज्ञानियांचा राजा म्हणून ज्याला मानतात, त्या ज्ञानदेवांनीसुध्दा ज्ञानेश्वरी लिहिताना ‘व्यासांचा मागोवा घेतू’ असे म्हणून सुरुवात केली.
व्यासपौर्णिमेच्या दिवशी ‘ओम नमोस्तुते व्यास, विशाल बुद्धे’ अशी प्रार्थना करून, त्यांना प्रथम वंदन करण्याचा प्रघात आहे, परंपरा आहे                                               Spiritual significance of Guru Purnima
  • According to Hinduism, Guru Purnima celebrates the birth of Ved Vyasa, the famous sage who is said to have edited the Vedas dividing them into four; he also wrote the Puranas which is considered the 'fifth Veda' and the Mahabharata. It is believed that on this day, prayers reach the Mahaguru directly and his blessings evade darkness and ignorance from a disciple's life.

  • According to Buddhism, on this day, Gautam Budhha delivered his first sermon or teaching to his first five disciples after he migrated from Bodhgaya to Sarnath. Thereafter, the 'Sangha' or the community of His disciples was formed.
  • According to Jainism, Lord Mahavira became the 'guru' to his first disciple Gautam Swami on this day. Thus this day is celebrated to venerate Mahavira.
  • According to ancient Indian history, this day is of utmost importance to farmers as they worship God for giving them a good rainfall for the next harvest.
Rituals of Guru Purnima
  • Among Hindus, this day is dedicated to the worshipping of one's guru who acts as the guiding light in his/her life.
  • Vyasa puja is held in many places where mantras are enchanted to venerate the 'Guru'. Devotees offer flowers and gifts as tokens of respect and 'prasad' and 'charanamrita' are distributed. Devotional songs, hymns and recitals are enchanted the whole day.
  • The holy text of Guru Gita is recited in the guru's memory.
  • 'Padapuja' or the worship of the sage's sandals are arranged by disciples in the different asharams and people gather at the place where the seat of their guru lies, rededicating themselves to his teachings and principles.
  • Buddhists observe the eight teachings of Buddha on this day. This ritual is known as 'Uposatha'.
  • With the advent of the rainy season from this day, Buddhist monks are known to start meditation and adopt other ascetic practices from this day.
  • Many ardent students of the Indian classical music pay tribute to their music 'gurus' on this day and reiterate the guru-shishya parampara (teacher-student tradition) which has been native to Indian culture since ages.                                                                                         The word "Guru" in Sanskrit is translated as "dispeller of darkness The Full Moon Day in the month of Ashadha (July-August) is known as Guru Purnima. This sacred day marks the very first transmission of the yogic sciences from Shiva – the Adiyogi or First Yogi – to the Saptarishis, the seven celebrated sages. This momentous occasion took place on the banks of the lake Kantisarovar, which stands a few kilometers above the Kedarnath Temple in the Himalayas. Thus, the Adiyogi became the Adi Guru or the First Guru on this day. The Saptarishis carried this knowing offered by Adiyogi throughout the world. Even today, every spiritual process on the planet draws from the spine of knowing created by Adiyogi.
